Managing technology distraction

With our practices becoming increasingly more reliant on technology, some of us find the constant interruptions from our devices distracting. So what can you do?

  •     Turn off the volume on your smartphone – ringer AND vibrations. Then put it in a drawer where you won’t see it.
  •     Consider answering emails from one device only – this reduces the number of dashed-off responses during non-business hours.
  •     Turn the ringer off on your office phone.
  •     Close every window on your computer except the task you are working on. This includes email!
  •     Reserve your personal calls to lunch hours only (except in the case of an emergency).
  •     Close your office door.

Nobody is completely attentive to their work 100 per cent of the time, but reserving blocks of time to “go off the grid” and focus on work that requires concentration will help reduce the risk of committing an error that could lead to a claim.
