Staying on the grid while travelling this summer

With summer officially here in Nova Scotia, most of us are planning at least a day or two away from the office to enjoy the sun. Here are some tips to keep in contact with the office, should it be necessary:

  • Bring your own smartphone and purchase an appropriate data plan based on your needs;
  • If you connect to a wifi hotspot, be mindful not to access confidential information and change your passwords often;
  • iPhone users are in luck: there are built-in apps that allow you to call another iDevice for a video or audio chat. Consider giving Facetime a try, if you haven’t already;
  • Viber and Skype also allow you to video chat and are platform agnostic, which means they work with any smartphone device. Viber also allows you to call a landline at no cost!

Lastly, if you want to know whether you will have smartphone coverage while travelling, this website provides you with Canada-wide coverage maps for all Canadian smartphone carriers: http://www.comparecellular.com/coverage-maps/.

And don’t forget your sunscreen!
