October is Cyber Security Awareness Month

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month so LIANS encourages you to take a few minutes this month to review your online safety protocol. Here are recommendations to help enhance your online security:

  • Use different passwords for your online accounts. If you have difficulty remembering them or creating new ones, try apps such as Password Keeper (BlackBerry), 1Password (Apple), or Password Manager (Android).
  • Use virus and anti-malware (“malicious software”) protection.
  • Always install the latest operating system updates.
  • Do not open attachments in emails received from senders you do not recognize. If you do recognize the name but you are still unsure, simply send them an email to confirm.
  • Do not share your name, contact information or financial information online. If you are making an online purchase, ensure the website is secure and the privacy settings are turned on. To confirm that a website is secure, confirm that the website address starts with “https” instead of “http” and look for the padlock icon on your status bar.
