RPM Tips from the trenches

The 7th annual LIANS Risk and Practice Management Conference was held on Friday, November 6, 2015, during which attendees enjoyed a session from panelists Margot Ferguson, Franco Tarulli and Tara Miller, who shared their “Tips from the Trenches”.

Some of these tips included the following:

  • Before opening your own law firm, create a business plan and consider including a mission statement. Consider why you are uniquely qualified, sources of work and timelines. Your business plan should be dynamic!
  • Use social media as a networking tool. Consider establishing five new connections a week and know your target audience.
  • Create and use your own office systems that are inherent to your area of law.
  • Consider using a “weekly marketing plan” and include items such as who you would like to connect with and articles you would like to submit for publication.
  • Track your time when you do the work.
  • Get a reasonable retainer and provide your client with a reasonable budget.
  • Be wary of the clients who badmouth their previous lawyer (you may be next!) or tell you their action is for “principle, not money”.
  • Do not dabble!
  • Attend CLEs that are applicable to your area of law.
  • Join a mentorship program both as a mentor and a mentee. Explaining what you do and how you do it really solidifies it for you and is a great learning tool.
  • Know when to outsource work.
  • Use technology to make your law practice more efficient but never discount using paper. Do what works for you!
